Frommer's Review
Turrets, towers, drawbridge, and battlements: Ashford has them all. The structure dates from the 13th century, when it was built for the De Burgo (Burke) family. Later it became a country residence of the Guinness clan. A hotel since 1939, it has been enlarged and updated over the years. It drew worldwide media attention in 1984 when President Ronald Reagan stayed here during his visit to Ireland, and in 2001, the Irish actor Pierce Brosnan held his wedding here. Reflected in the glassy waters of Lough Corrib, the castle sits regally amid vast forested, flowering grounds. The fairy tale continues inside with antiques, medieval armor, carved oak paneling, and museum-quality paintings. Bedrooms convey an air of privilege with heavy fabrics, soft carpets, and big, comfortable beds. The restaurant serves respectable European cuisine with a stiffly formal attitude -- jacket and tie are required for men after 7pm. There are two bars -- the jovial Dungeon and the Prince of Wales Room, which has the air of a men's club. Check online before booking, as specials are often offered outside of the high season.
