Waterford Castle Review

There's something magical about taking a boat back home to your castle at the end of the night. Dating back 800 years, this is a deeply secluded castle on a private island in the River Suir, surrounded by woodland and an 18-hole championship golf course. It's 3km (2 miles) south of Waterford, accessible only by the castle's private car ferry. With an original Norman keep and two Elizabethan wings, it is the real thing, with a leaded roof, mullioned windows, and fairy-tale turrets. Inside are oak-paneled walls, colorful tapestries, and huge stone fireplaces. The bedroom decor is a bit dated, and it could all use a bit of a makeover given the price charged, but four of the five suites are furnished with four-poster or canopied beds, and all rooms have firm mattresses and claw-foot bathtubs. The atmosphere is graciously informal; the staff are excellent and can help make arrangements for horseback riding, fishing, watersports, and other local activities.

Facilities:
Restaurant; bar; concierge; 18-hole championship golf course; room service; tennis courts

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
