This modernistic building with an outdoor escalator rises above the sidewalk across from the downtown waterfront. A favorite with business travelers, the five-story hotel offers excellent free Wi-Fi, irons, desks, and shower-tub combos in the large rooms, which feature light-colored wood furnishings including an ample work desk and large closet. Only 20 rooms have water views, while the others have a view of humble homes and clotheslines in a long-established neighborhood. Stay away from the rooms on the second floor above the breakfast area, as the noise is considerable all morning. Local execs and politicos huddle in privacy at the bountiful complimentary buffet breakfast, which includes eggs cooked to order, platters of fresh fruit, and serving dishes of sausages, beans, potatoes, and other morning fare. A small, shallow pool that overlooks the waterfront at the lobby's far end pleases children but isn't large enough for actual swimming, although poolside chairs that face the sea are the best front-row seats in town for watching the daily procession of cruise ships and ferries.
