Union Creek Resort ReviewPractically across the road from the Rogue River Gorge, this rustic resort has been catering to Crater Lake visitors since the early 1900s; it's on the National Register of Historic Places. In our opinion, it's the best (as well as the closest) lodging option outside the west entrance to Crater Lake National Park. Tall trees shade the grounds of the resort, which is on Ore. 62 about 23 miles from Rim Village. Accommodations include lodge rooms, with a bit of historic charm, and very basic cabins (many of which have kitchenettes). Lodge units accommodate two to four people and share bathrooms; cabins sleep 2 to 10. ATV and snowmobile rentals are available, as are Wi-Fi access, DVDs, and TVs. Across the road is an ice cream shop and Beckie's Cafe, which serves three home-style meals a day in summer for $5 to $18. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
