Dar Ahlam ReviewDown a winding track and across the dry Oued Dadès sits the inconspicuous front door to one of Morocco's premier accommodations. Set amidst 2 hectares (5 acres) of gardens, the "House of Dreams" is the work of Frenchman Thierry Teyssier. Within a renovated 1920s kasbah, every tiny detail -- and I mean every tiny detail -- has been considered, designed, and immaculately styled by Thierry and a team of professionals that include a landscaper, parfumeur, chef and pâtissier, and an interior-lighting specialist. The result is a five-star experience from the moment you are greeted at the door by English-speaking manager Eric Hertz. Earthy colors and lots of natural cloth abound, be it in the grand salon, where aperitifs and digestifs are taken each night, or the different theme suites and villas. No two rooms are alike: The Riad suite has a claw-foot tub for two, and the Ethnique suite has a decidedly sub-Saharan feel. The villas are perfect for families, with individual pools and multiple bedrooms. The cuisine is nouvelle Marocain, and most of the ingredients are sourced from the on-site vegetable garden. Meals are taken wherever and whenever you wish. There's a large outdoor heated swimming pool, hammam, and massage room. You are also assigned your own personal guide -- one of more than 25 staff from villages within the Skoura palmeraie -- who meets you upon arrival to discuss what you want to see or do, which can include biking through the palmeraie, hiking in the nearby Atlas, hot-air ballooning, or a candlelit dinner at dusk beside a secluded oasis. Dar Ahlam is very expensive and out of the way, but this is one place that delivers on its promises. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
