Lewtrenchard Manor ReviewOn the northwest edges of Dartmoor, near the oft-visited Okehampton, this 17th-century Jacobean house has a certain charm and grace. There has been a manor of some sort on this property since 1086 when it was mentioned in the Domesday Book. It was at one time the residence of Victorian hymn writer Rev. Sabine Baring Gould (hardly a household name today). It is set in a garden open to the general public as part of the National Gardens Scheme, and you can take several scenic walks. As was typical of its time, the house features oak paneling, leaded windows, beautifully detailed ceilings, and antiques. Rooms come in various shapes and sizes, but each is exceedingly comfortable. Five bedrooms are more contemporary and stylish than the existing rooms, yet still in keeping with the Jacobean style. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
