The Roxbury

This hugely appealing lodging is all about fun, contemporary design, as unexpected as it is welcome in these rural parts. Just 1 block back from Main Street, it's a large Colonial home with an attached wing, a 1960s motor lodge, updated with colorful, hipster styling (the bright-green doors are a hint of what lies behind them). There are motel units, boundary-pushing and whimsically named studio theme rooms, and swanky suites, including a full two-bedroom suite, a bit more restrained and elegant, and ideal for families, occupying the upstairs of the main house. Most accommodations feature full kitchenettes. Rooms are sleek and modern, with Day-Glo colors, chrome accents, and tastefully modern furnishings. The Genie's Bottle and Shagadelic suites are delightfully over-the-top. From the widow's watch or the screened-in porch out back are great views of the verdant Catskills and nearby creek. A terrific recent addition is the small, low-key Shimmer Spa, with a hot tub, sauna, fireplace, and shower made of river rock.
