Hotel Varonos

This small hotel has to be the best buy in town, with Delphi's famous views over the olive plain from most rooms. Some 20 years ago, I once arrived here with an ailing gardenia plant, and the entire family pitched in to make sure it was well taken care of. In those days, the hotel was very simple, almost austere, but over the years, this has become one of the coziest and most comfortable small hotels in Greece. The guest rooms are very comfortable (terrific mattresses), painted in soothing pastels, and the lobby is anything but austere, with lots of plants and a fire when it's chilly (and free Internet service). The view is still fantastic, the Varonos family could not be more helpful, and the breakfast buffet in the cheerful breakfast room is unusually varied (four different kinds of juice and at least as many baked goods, along with yogurt, fresh fruits, eggs, cheese, and ham). Check out the family-owned shop next door with local honey, herbs, preserves, and other goodies.
