Lan Anh Hotel Review

This is the closest thing to an eco-lodge in the highlands. Accommodations are simple, with narrow rooms done in wood with canopy beds. There's a good central restaurant with an English menu. But the real attraction to this rural stop on the Dong Da River is a chance to meet up with young Mr. Trang, the owner and manager of the hotel who organizes local treks and offers helpful advice and information for onward travel. Friendly staff can help out with any eventuality during your visit, and the shaded compound with a few hammocks will draw you in. Many travelers find themselves budgeting another day, taking good day treks and enjoying meeting fellow travelers in this rustic, homey spot.

Mr. Trang runs good trips to villages in the surrounding countryside. He's produced a helpful map, and if he's not around, you can make the circuits yourself. Some routes require that you have your own transport, preferably a motorbike, and others are just short day hikes along the Dong Da River valley to local White Thai villages, returning by way of bridge crossings and down the other side of the valley.

Facilities:
Restaurant/bar w/good English menu; Internet (spotty); motorbike

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
