A 3km (2-mile) drive from Roseau and the Canefield Airport and a 2-minute walk to the beach, this hilltop retreat is a great little bargain. Opening onto panoramic views, the rooms are in two bungalows and have louvered windows and doors to capture the breezes in lieu of air-conditioning. Ceilings fans hum day and night, and you can also retreat to terraces with hammocks. Each of the accommodations has bedside tables and reading lamps (not always a guarantee on Dominica). All rooms are nonsmoking. The handmade quilts on the beds, which have excellent mattresses, add a homey touch. One four-poster bed, a mammoth wooden affair, is 250 years old. Bathrooms are small but well maintained, and each has a shower. This is a friendly, family-style place, and there are lovely gardens with exotic plants that attract both hummingbirds and iguanas. The local cook is one of the best on the island, and she'll pack a picnic lunch for you.
