Review of Dublin CastleThis 13th-century structure was the center of British power in Ireland for more than 7 centuries, until the new Irish government took it over in 1922. You can walk the grounds for free, although this is largely municipal office space now and is disappointingly dominated by parking lots. To see the inside you have to join a tour, although they're reasonably priced; highlights include the 13th-century record tower; the state apartments, once the residence of English viceroys; and the chapel royal, a 19th-century Gothic building with particularly fine plaster decoration and carved-oak gallery fronts and fittings. If it's open, check out the undercroft, an excavated site on the grounds where an early Viking fortress stood, and the treasury, built in the early 18th century. There are also a vaguely interesting on-site craft shop, heritage center, and restaurant. Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
