At the west end of Stradun, close to Pile Gate, you pass through a lovely 14th-century cloister as you enter the Franciscan Monastery. Rimmed on four sides by late-Romanesque arcades, the cloister opens onto a blissful garden, planted with orange trees and palms, provoking the sort of peaceful contemplation that the monks no doubt also seek. From here, you have access to Europe’s oldest working pharmacy, founded in 1317, and still in business today, selling herbal lotions and tonics, made to centuries-old recipes. On the shelves, note the medieval laboratory equipment, mortars, and measuring implements. There’s also a small religious museum, containing medieval manuscripts and gold and silver church paraphernalia.
