Distressing but unavoidable, the issue of defense has been an ongoing theme through Dubrovnik’s centuries-old history, most recently during the Croatian War of Independence (1991–1995). Opened in 2003, this gallery is dedicated to photojournalism from warzones, with an emphasis on the human suffering that wars cause (as opposed to the glorification or vilification of the regimes involved). In summer 2014, War Photo Ltd hosted “Syria’s War: A Journal of Pain,” featuring the works of Mexican Pulitzer Prize-winner Narciso Contreras. Past exhibitions have included “Purple Hearts,” examining the lives of U.S. soldiers after they have been in active service abroad, and “Srebrenica Genocide 11/07/95,” recounting one of the most horrific chapters of the Bosnian war.
