Frommer's Review
Opened in 1998 to much acclaim, Zimbali (a 35-min. drive north of Durban) has brought some much-needed class to the Holiday Coast. Surrounded by secluded indigenous coastal forest, with a private-access beach and golf course, the lodge is inspired by the architecture of tropical climates, with local influences including the nearby sugar baron estates and Indian temples. The opulent interior (decorated by the same team responsible for the Palace of the Lost City) is a fine example of Afro-colonial-chic style, with many of the objects custom-made for the resort. Set on a bluff, the buildings (including the rooms, which are situated in the gardens surrounding the lodge) overlook a natural lake, surrounded by forested hillsides and, beyond, the ocean. A large number of activities are on offer, including the Tom Weiskopf-designed 18-hole championship golf course, with a new golf course planned for completion in 2009. A selection of villas offering two- to six-bed luxury self-catering accommodations are scattered around the estate.

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
