In the northern suburb of Umhlanga (useful for the new airport location), this is also the best leisure hotel in the Durban environs, with a great beachside location; cool, breezy public spaces; and bland, standard-issue room decor. It is home to one of the city's best restaurants (The Sugar Club is a member of Chaine de Rotisseurs and Moët et Chandon Restaurant Circle), has good facilities, and affords great sea views from every room and public area, and such personal touches as your own lounger on the beach (it's one of the few hotels on the entire coastline to offer this obvious service). Gateway, the best shopping center in Durban, is within walking distance. Note: If the price strikes you as a tad steep, or you prefer real opulence in a more intimate atmosphere, take a look at nearby Teremok Marine (tel. 031/561-5848; www.teremok.co.za; R2,500 double), a plush guesthouse with excellent facilities shared by just eight gorgeous suites.
