Frommer's Review
On the Duke University campus, about a mile from U.S. 15/501, this is the premier inn of Durham, with an 18-hole golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones. Named for the original tobacco tycoon, it's filled with Duke memorabilia, including Washington Duke's own antique desk. The property is like a castle, with an L-shaped lower wing. Many of the helpful staff members are university students. Although the impressive redbrick mansion is traditional in style, the bedrooms are modern, with big mullioned windows, upholstered chairs, quilted spreads, and either one or two double beds. In 2004, the hotel underwent a massive renovation and is now better than ever.
Naturally, someone had to name the bar Bull Durham. The full-service restaurant, Fairview, the most comfortable in town, serves an excellent contemporary cuisine and features piano music.
