Uncle Remus Museum, Hwy. 441 South (tel. 706/485-6856; www.uncleremus.com), lies in Turner Park, 3 blocks south of the courthouse. It has a kid-pleasing collection of memorabilia about Br'er Rabbit, Br'er Fox, and Harris's other storybook critters. The museum is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm (closed 1 hr. for lunch) and Sunday 2 to 5pm. Admission is $1 for adults and 50¢ for children 7 and younger. Closed Tuesday from November to March.

Bronson House, 114 N. Madison Ave. (tel. 706/485-6442), is the home of the Eatonton/Putnam Historical Society. Constructed in 1822 by Thomas T. Napier, it was purchased in 1852 by Andrew Reid, who was the first patron of Joel Chandler Harris. The author lived with his mother in a tiny cottage in back of the mansion. Several rooms of the Greek Revival mansion have been restored, displaying local memorabilia. The house can be visited on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5pm; admission is $2.50.
