Around the corner from the Royal Lyceum, the Traverse is something of a local legend. Beginning in the 1960s as an experimental theater company that doubled as bohemian social club, it still produces contemporary drama at its height in Scotland -- as well as premiering the best of the country's young playwrights. There are two theaters in this custom-made subterranean complex: seating 100 and 250 respectively on the benches. Upstairs the Traverse bar is where to find the hippest dramatists and actors (as well as their courtiers in tow).
