This historic district used to be a separate township, but was amalgamated with Edmonton in 1912 and still contains some of the best-preserved landmarks in the city. It's best seen on foot, guided by the brochures given out at the Old Strathcona Foundation, 10324 82nd Ave., fourth floor (tel. 780/433-5866). It's easy to spend an afternoon here, just wandering the shops, sitting at street-side cafes, and people-watching. This is hipster-central for Edmonton, where students, artists, and the city's alternative community come to hang out. In addition, if you're looking for good value in restaurants or the center of pubs and nightlife, Old Strathcona is ground zero: Come take in the sometimes rowdy evening scene. Be sure to stop by the Old Strathcona Farmers Market (tel. 780/439-1844), at 83rd Avenue and 103rd Street. It's open Saturday year-round, plus Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in summer.
