From the outside, with its limestone facade and gargoyles, the Mac looks like a feudal château -- It's no wonder that this is where Queen Elizabeth II stays when she's in town. Originally opened in 1915, the restored Hotel Macdonald has retained signature elements such as its deep tubs, brass door plates, and paneled doors. Everything, including the service, is absolutely top-notch -- including the views over the North Saskatchewan River. Rooms are large and beautifully furnished with luxurious upholstery, feather duvets, and original art. Even pets get special treatment: a gift bag of treats and a map of pet-friendly parks. Needless to say, there aren't many hotels like this in Edmonton, or in Canada for that matter.
