The Best Hotel Bargains

Golden Tulip Hotel Flamenco (Cairo; tel. 02/735-0815 or 735-0190 www.flamencohotels.com): A clean and pleasant mid-sized hotel in Zamalek Standard amenities plus a gym and lively restaurant and bar. Request a room with huge bay windows overlooking the Nile.

President Hotel (Cairo; tel. 02/735-0652 or 735-0718): Moderately priced and clean, with basic rooms, some of which have balconies. Three stars, air conditioning and satellite television. Centrally located in Zamalek.

Sanafir Hotel (Sharm El Sheikh; tel. 069/600-197): Cute three-star pioneer in Na'ama Bay, with traditional white-domed bungalows and simple, air-conditioned rooms. The main drawbacks: no private beach and lots of noise from the popular Bus Stop disco.

Pigeons House (Sharm El Sheikh; tel. 069/600-998): One of the cheapest options in Na'ama Bay, popular with divers and backpackers.

Hotel Union (Alexandria; tel. 03/480-7312): Very cheap, with balconied rooms overlooking the Mediterranean that cost extra. Breakfast is included but there is no air-conditioning and no restaurant.

El Gezira (Luxor; tel. 095/310-034; www.el-gezira.com): Small family owned-hotel with a large garden and quaint roof terrace. Relatively new, and recently added eight apartment rooms that can accomodate 4-6 guests and have kitchens. Kid-friendly.

Basma (Aswan; tel. 097/310-901 or 310-902 or 310-903): Sprawling four-star favorite perched on Aswan's highest hill. Good value with a great views, a nice swimming pool and landscaped gardens. Rooms are clean and tastefully decorated, and come with private balconies.
