The Best Websites

Touregypt.net: Formerly the government's official tourism website, this is by far the most complete online resource, with pages and pages of anything from hotel reviews to articles about etiquette to koshari recipes. Lists contact information for travel agents, embassies and anybody else you might need to reach. Double check to make sure the information is up-to-date before you head out.

Cairodining.com: Addresses, phone numbers and other useful information for most restaurants and bars in Cairo.

Otlob.com: Otlob in Arabic means "ask for it," and that's just what the website lets you do: you can check out restaurant menus online and order food delivery with a few clicks of the mouse. Also sells flowers and electronics.

EgyptToday.com: Investigative features, social commentary and coverage of current affairs, for some harder-hitting news than you're likely to find elsewhere. Also carries restaurant and cultural reviews, with a reliable directory of local resources.

Egypttourism.org: The official website of the Egyptian Tourist Authority is not as comprehensive or up-to-date as you would hope, but it's good for a basic overview, and lists licensed tour operators in the US and Canada.

Omeldonia.com: News, reviews, gossip, classifieds, events, and much more. The best spot to get tapped into the local scene. (The site opens up in Arabic; the "English" tab is located on the upper right corner.)

Weekly.ahram.org.eg: The English language version of the widely-read semi-official newspaper Al-Ahram. The closest you'll get to reading an Egyptian daily if you don't know Arabic.
