Without doubt, the best diving and snorkeling area for both countries is in the Corn Islands, 80km (50 miles) east of the Atlantic coast in Nicaragua. Here, you'll find coral reefs and caves comparable to the best in Honduras and Belize without the crowds. The Pacific coast is much more limited. Diving is possible in San Juan del Sur, but there are currently no dive shops. Los Cobanos on El Salvador's Balsamo Coast is another possible dive area, but poor visibility and no reefs mean it is a poor option compared to the sapphire waters of the Caribbean. For something different, try diving in a deep, blue crater lake. Ilopango, which reaches a depth of 250m (820 ft.) is a popular diving spot in El Salvador.
