Visitor Information

Elba's only year-round tourist office is opposite the ferry dock, at Viale Elba 4, Portoferraio (tel. 0565-914-671; www.aptelba.it; Mon-Sat 8am-7pm, Sun 9:30am-12:30pm and 3-6pm). Note, however, the provision of tourist services is undergoing constant review, and you may find those hours only apply during the high season. For information about outdoor activities in western Elba, also contact the Casa del Parco, Fortezza Pisana, Marciana (tel. 0565-901-030). It's also worth consulting private website www.elba.org. Note, too, that all opening hours in Elba are subject to frequent changes from season to season, and year to year.

For help in the hotel hunt, head to the Associazione Albergatori Isola d'Elba, upstairs at Calata Italia 26 (tel. 0565-915-555; www.elbapromotion.it; open Mon-Fri 9am-1pm and 3-6pm). Although it isn't an official body, its network does include most hotels on the island, and it'll be happy to give you a price list.

Festivals & Markets

Elba puts on a wine festival in September or October at Le Ghiaie beach behind Portoferraio. During the July and August high season, every town puts on some sort of small festa; in Marciana Alta, it's an August medieval pageant that robes the locals in costume and fills the streets with artisans offering old-fashioned crafts. Portoferraio's weekly Friday market is held on Viale Zambelli.
