Dar Alouane

This small dar lives up to its alternative name, La Maison des Couleurs, with shades of green, yellow, orange, and pink throughout -- and an owner/manager who is just as bright. It took 4 years of renovation before German native Petra Köppe -- formerly a teacher of English and Japanese -- opened this decidedly un-Moroccan maison d'hôte. Guests are greeted by a bright courtyard with a small garden, Roman columns, and large black-and-white floor tiles. Not all rooms offer en suite facilities, and one interior wall, which is shared with the dar's neighbors, is where two bathrooms sit almost suspended in air in a very creative feat of construction. The compact, colorful rooms are simply furnished; some come with a window that adds light and air to the whole house. A small kitchen is available for use by guests, and the bright-green, split-level rooftop terrace offers superb 360-degree views. It's very reasonably priced, and is close to most of the medina's restaurants and shops.
