Frommer's Review
In the heart of the medina, this 18th-century former school and caid's (judge) residence has been in the Maboul family since 1920. English-speaking brothers Abdel and Samir, and their cousin Youssef, have converted the family home into one of the most welcoming maisons d'hôte in Essaouira. There's a range of different size and furnished rooms: The original bedrooms have had bathrooms added and are more traditional in design, while there are newer rooms on the rooftop terrace that are relatively smaller and more simply furnished. Families are welcome and encouraged to stay in one or both of the two large suites. The covered central courtyard leads to a communal dining room. Other rooms on the ground floor include a lounge with a TV and stereo, and the house kitchen, where resident cook Myriam offers home-cooked meals, afternoon tea with pastries, kid's meals, special high-carb dishes for surfers, and cooking lessons. She will even create a special dinner menu for guests and their invited friends. This accommodating attitude stems from that of the three young lads, who are part of the surf culture in Essaouira and have a management style that is very professional and courteous, but also unobtrusive and easy-going. Tip: Room no. 5 is classified as a single because of its solitary double bed and private outside shower. However, it can also accommodate a couple, and is a bargain at 300dh ($38/£19).
