Dar 91 Review

Perhaps more than any other maison d'hôte in Essaouira, this is a real "home away from home." Occupying the front half of what was an 18th-century police watchtower, Dar 91 exudes a warm friendliness and genuine authenticity from the moment you step into its small entrance hall and make your way up to the light and airy first floor. The dar comprises of two floors with one bedroom and one bathroom on each, bisected by another floor with a large living and dining area complete with its own kitchen. Owner/managers Jeremy and Paolo are very mindful of the medina home's traditional purpose of sanctuary and privacy, and a iPod/mp3 docking station is the only concession to accommodations otherwise void of electronic entertainment. While the dar faces outward and lacks the central courtyard common to this type of accommodations, this only accentuates the feeling of privacy; a rooftop terrace with sweeping medina views is adequate compensation. Its location, close to the fresh produce souks, also adds to the sense of authentic medina living. Children are most welcome, and the community-minded owners are involved in a number of social and educational initiatives that are self-funded through their in-house Sadaqa, or voluntary charity program. Dar 91 can accommodate a maximum of five people, can only be booked in its entirety, and is perfect for families or two couples traveling together.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
