Convento de São Paulo

Motorists might want to retreat to a romantic hideaway in the environs, lying 27 kilometers (16.7 miles) from Estremoz or 34 kilometers (21 miles) from Évora. Once in the town of Redondo, motorists follow the signs to Aldeia da Serra for 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) where they come upon this charming inn. The origins of this restored hotel actually go back to 1182, although the present buildings, of course, are much later.

Some accommodations lie in the former convent's ancient cells; others are of more recent construction. A beautiful restaurant, serving an excellent cuisine, O Ermita, has been installed as well, and diners enjoy their meals beneath 18th-century restored frescoes. Some of the best regional specialties are served, chefs using products grown in the province itself. Many of the recipes were passed down from monks who used to inhabit the place.
