Review of Esztergom CathedralThis massive, neoclassical cathedral on Szent István tér on Castle Hill, is the largest church in Hungary. In good weather, it is a 3.5km (2 mile) walk, otherwise bus nos. 1 or 6. The cathedral is Esztergom's most popular attraction and one of Hungary's most impressive buildings. Built in the last century, it was to replace the original cathedral ruined during the Turkish occupation. The blue and red marble coloring in the church and chapel is striking, and it claims the world's largest altarpiece painted on one continuous piece of canvas. The crypt, built in old Egyptian style with a magnificent statue of an angel, is also the last resting place of bishops. The cathedral treasury (kincstár) contains a dazzling array of ecclesiastical jewels and gold works. If you brave the ascent of the cupola, you're rewarded with unparalleled views of Esztergom and the surrounding Hungarian and Slovakian countryside. There is a warning for the cupola that if you're agoraphobic, you should not risk it. Actually, it should be if you're claustrophobic, as the staircase and walking areas are extremely narrow. If you happen to be in town during the first week of August, don't miss out on one of the classical guitar concerts performed in the cathedral; the acoustics are said to be sublime. The concerts are part of Esztergom's annual International Guitar Festival. Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
