On the Estrada de Estremoz (N18) stands a national monument that has been turned into one of the most luxurious inns in the Alentejo. Dating from 1458, it is a converted monastery with some of the facilities of a resort, including pools, a tennis court, and a spa that's the best in Alentejo. You have a choice of rooms in the former monk cells or else in a series of modern units. Bedrooms are beautifully furnished, and they open onto panoramic views of the rolling green hills and Alentejo countryside. There is an opulence here rarely found in the province. Also onsite is a deluxe restaurant featuring a first-rate regional cuisine with international specialties as well. A chapel on the grounds is covered with a stunning collection of hand-painted azulejos (tiles).
