At the edge of the Exeter Academy campus and within easy walking distance of downtown, the big Inn of Exeter has the dark, dusky feel of a British drinking club (or, when not fully booked, a haunted house). It's all dark wood and maroon carpets, oil paintings, statuary in the alcoves, and baskets of fruit. The inn, which caters in large part to parents and staff associated with the academy, was built in 1932 in Colonial Revival brick; with its prominent chimneys, it could easily pass for a campus building, though it's unaffiliated. Rooms are tastefully furnished with reproduction American antiques, including some canopy beds. There's a range of accommodations here -- a few king-size rooms and suites even have Jacuzzis, while others are standard or even a bit on the tiny side. Almost all are welcoming and homey.
