Frommer's Review
In the "uptown" section of the medina, a 5-minute walk from the landmark Sofitel Palais Jamaï, is Ahmed Azami's former family home-turned-elegant maison d'hôte. His cousins, Abdelhamid and Nadia, undertook an 18-month restoration before the dar opened in 2006, and the result is captivating. A dark entrance opens onto a very spacious courtyard of zellij tiling and Marrakchi-ochre tadelakt walls. This earthy color scheme continues throughout the riad and makes for a pleasant change from other, garish interiors. A variety of room sizes and configurations are offered, including the two-room Oumkeltoum suite, which was the former apartment of the family's matriarch, Lalla Anebar. The Amina suite has interconnecting rooms that can accommodate two people in each. All of the rooms are stylishly furnished without being over the top, and include refurbished bathrooms with all the modern conveniences and large bathtubs. Nice welcoming touches in the rooms include flowers, a fruit basket, and chocolates on the pillows. Dar Anebar's rooftop takes full advantage of its elevated position and is a perfect spot for an extended brunch or a sunset drink. Ahmed is the consummate professional and is always around to help guests negotiate the medina, find a guide, or head out on day trips.
Note: "Uptown" does mean "up" in Dar Anebar's case. It's a good 15- to 20-minute uphill walk from the Kairouine Mosque, but downhill all the way from Sofitel Palais Jamaï.
