Frommer's Review
It's a bit of a walk up the alleyway to Ryad Mabrouka ("luck"), but once you've arrived, you'll find one of the medina's most popular maisons d'hôte. Michel Trezzy and his partners Pierre and Caroline have got the combination just right: an authentically restored 14th-century mansion in one of the quieter corners of the medina staffed by trilingual (Moroccan Arabic, English, and French) Moroccans who have been trained in all aspects of good hospitality by Michel himself. The tall mansion has a feeling of seclusion thanks to high walls surrounding the almost-overgrown back garden and pool, but this doesn't equate to feeling hemmed in. A large, open-top courtyard opens out to the garden, while a first-floor enclosed veranda affords a magical view above the high wall and into the medina beyond. The spacious bedrooms, also with high ceilings, are carved cedar wood, zellij, and stucco with large, modern tadelakt bathrooms. The entire house is decorated in a refined mix of Moroccan antiques and French artwork that reflects Michel's taste. Ryad Mabrouka's cuisine is well known, and most guests choose to dine in most nights, having returned by late afternoon to enjoy aperitifs and the sunset on the veranda or the large roof terrace.
