This third member of a group of resorts that also includes Wagrain and St. Johann im Pongau is just 8km (5 miles) southwest of Altenmarkt, in a lovely setting in the Enns Valley, on the A10 south of Salzburg. From the village, you can take a cable car to Griesskareck at 1,992m (6,535 ft.).
Flachau, previously known only to Europeans, is just beginning to attract more international skiers. Hence, the prices are fairly reasonable. The site has almost 1.5km (1 mile) of floodlit downhill runs, modern lift facilities that include the world's first six-seat bubble-encased chairlift, and buses that haul the easily bored from one ski area to another. Snowfall here is practically guaranteed, plus there are four ski schools, 161km (100 miles) of cross-country ski trails, toboggan runs, and ice-skating facilities.
