Nightlife

For events taking place during your visit, check Flagstaff Live (www.flaglive.com), a free weekly newspaper available at shops and restaurants downtown. The university has many musical and theatrical groups that perform throughout most of the year, and several clubs around town book a variety of live acts.

The Orpheum Theater, 15 W. Aspen St. (tel. 928/556-1580; www.orpheumpresents.com), in downtown Flagstaff, gets the best of touring rock, folk, and country acts, so be sure to check the schedule while you're in town. In summer, also check out what's showing at Movies on the Square (tel. 928/853-4292; www.heritagesquaretrust.org), a free outdoor movie series shown at downtown Flagstaff's Heritage Square on Friday nights. There's live entertainment before the movies, as well as on Thursday nights and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. In addition, during the warmer months, there are regular outdoor concerts at the Pine Mountain Amphitheater, Fort Tuthill County Park (tel. 928/774-0899; www.pinemountainamphitheater.com), which is located at exit 337 off I-17 south of Flagstaff.

Flagstaff has three good brewpubs. My favorite is the Beaver Street Brewery, 11 S. Beaver St. (tel. 928/779-0079). Also try Flagstaff Brewing Co., 16 E. Route 66 (tel. 928/773-1442; www.flagbrew.com), or Mogollon Brewing Co., 15 N. Agassiz St. (tel. 928/773-8950; www.mogbrew.com). Climb the stairs to the Wine Loft, 17 N. San Francisco St. (tel. 928/773-9463), a wine bar located above the Artists Gallery in downtown Flagstaff; if you're like me, you'll wish you had a place like this in your town. There's live music by local musicians several nights per week. I wouldn't think of leaving Flagstaff without hanging out here at least one evening. Also check out Cuveé 928, 6 E. Aspen Ave., Ste. 110 (tel. 928/214-9463), a wine bar right on Heritage Square in downtown Flagstaff.

For a livelier scene, check out the Museum Club, 3404 E. Route 66 (tel. 928/526-9434; www.museumclub.com), a Flagstaff institution and one of America's classic roadhouses. Built in the early 1900s and often called the Zoo Club, this cavernous log saloon is filled with deer antlers, stuffed animals, and trophy heads. There's live music (mostly country) on weekends.

Other places around town with live music include Charly's Pub & Grill, 23 N. Leroux St. (tel. 928/779-1919; www.weatherfordhotel.com), inside the historic Weatherford Hotel. This place has long been a popular student hangout featuring live blues and rock 7 nights a week. For a mellower scene, see what's on the schedule at the Campus Coffee Bean, 1800 S. Milton Rd. (tel. 928/556-0660).
