Although this rustic inn has only two simply furnished rooms and is a bit out-of-the-way (about midway between Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon), it is so unusual I think you should know about it. It's definitely not for everyone, but a stay here just might be the most memorable part of a visit to northern Arizona. The modern log inn is an off-the-grid home, which means that electricity here is produced by an array of photovoltaic panels. Also, water is trucked in regularly because there is no source of water in the remote valley where the inn is located. The Shooting Star is operated by professional photographer Tom Taylor, whose real passion is astronomy; as part of your stay, you'll get to study the stars and planets through some of Taylor's many telescopes. Because the inn is so far from town, you may want to arrange to have Taylor cook dinners for you.
