Frommer's Review

This is the most famous, most prestigious, and most legendary hotel in Frankfurt, with service and a historic setting that's unmatched anywhere else in town. The only hotel in Frankfurt that really measures up is our favorite, the Hessischer Hof , but the restaurant (Restaurant Français) is better here. The highly visible five-story flagship of one of Germany's most elegant hotel chains, it was established in 1872 behind a landmark stone facade that's very central, very prominent, and very grand. Its rooms are in high demand by visiting dignitaries, especially during the book fair, when guests as prominent as the former king of Greece have been denied a room. Public areas are discreet and plush; bedrooms high ceilinged, sun flooded, and gracefully furnished. Some of the more traditional rooms have valuable antiques, but those in the Bethmann Wing have a 1970s aura with bland blond-wood furnishings. Its art collection, including Gobelin tapestries, French antiques, and 18th-century portraits, is noteworthy.

Facilities:
4 restaurants; bar; health club; sauna; solarium; steam bath; business center; room service; babysitting; laundry service; dry cleaning; nonsmoking rooms; rooms for those w/limited mobility

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
