You'll find more cafes and hole-in-the-wall bars around Fribourg's railway station than anywhere else in town, especially along either side of boulevard de Pérolles, rue de Romont, and rue de l'Hôpital. A particularly cozy bar is La Cave de la Rose, in the cellar of the Hôtel de la Rose, 1, rue de Morat (tel. 026/351-01-01). Le Macumba, 17, route de Tavel (tel. 026/481-33-88), is a high-energy, high-volume disco favored by folks under 30. A bit more mellow and sedate is the disco in the cellar of the Restaurant l'Escale, 3, route de Belfaux, in the suburb of Givisiez (tel. 026/466-27-67), about 1km (half a mile) west of Fribourg's commercial core.
For a drink with a view, take the elevator to the 31st floor to Bar Rouge at Messelplatz 10 (tel. 026/361-3031). The views from here are panoramic, the ambience mellow, the company simpatico. Two other popular joints (especially on weekends) lie near the old railyard. Try nt*/Lounge, Erienstrasse 21 (tel. 026/683-35-46), a stylish retreat for drinking and music, next to Wagenmeister, Erlenstrasse 23 (tel. 026/683-96-77), which is a punker's pub adorned with rusty steel drums and a young crowd that's up on the latest drugs. Cargo Bar, St. Johanns-Rheinweg 46 (tel. 026/321-00-72), is a riverfront dive that's popular with ages 20 to 30. Music, both disco recorded and live, rules the night here.
One hot spot is Planet Edelweiss, Mariahilf, Düdingen (tel. 026/492-05-05), an 18th-century inn converted into a bustling restaurant and dance club. It draws a young crowd to its location a 5-minute ride northeast of the center. The club keeps the latest hours in the area: until 2am Sunday to Tuesday, 3am Wednesday and Thursday, and 4am Friday and Saturday.
