Frommer's Review

The Galápagos Explorer II is arguably the most luxurious ship in the Galápagos. The 100-passenger cruise ship offers all the amenities you could ever want: two Jacuzzis, bars, first-class food, nightly naturalist lectures, library, game area, and even a medical center. Most importantly, all the accommodations are exterior-facing suites, some have private balconies with small sitting areas, a minibar, and a TV. But in my opinion, when you're on a ship like this, you sacrifice personal attention for comfort. I'm just not a big fan of the large-cruise-ship experience in the Galápagos. When you're exploring the islands with 100 other people, the islands lose some of their mystique. Plus, you always feel a bit rushed, because there is always a group behind you, waiting for you to continue on your way. It's all a matter of taste, of course -- if you like big cruise ships, you'll love the Galápagos Explorer II. But if you want to linger on the islands and ask your guide questions, you'll be better off on a smaller ship.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
