Frommer's Review

The Galápagos Explorer II is arguably the most luxurious ship in the Galápagos. The 100-passenger cruise ship offers all the amenities you could ever want: swimming pool, Jacuzzi, bars, first-class food, research center, nightly naturalist lectures, library, game room, and even a medical center. Most importantly, all the accommodations are exterior-facing suites, with small sitting areas, a minibar, and a TV/VCR. But in my opinion, when you're on a ship like this, you sacrifice personal attention for comfort. I'm just not a big fan of the large-cruise-ship experience in the Galápagos. When you're exploring the islands with 100 other people, the islands lose some of their mystique. Plus, you always feel a bit rushed, because there is always a group behind you, waiting for you to continue on your way. It's all a matter of taste, of course -- if you like big cruise ships, you'll love the Galápagos Explorer II. But if you want to linger on the islands and ask your guide questions, you'll be better off on a smaller ship.
