Galiano is perhaps the most physically striking of the Gulf Islands, particularly the mountainous southern shores. Mount Sutil, Mount Galiano, and the exposed cliffs above Georgeson Bay (simply called the Bluffs) rise above sheep-filled meadows, shadowy forests, and fern-lined ravines. Active Pass, the narrow strait that separates Galiano from Mayne Island, is another scenic high spot: All the ferry and much of the pleasure-craft traffic between Vancouver and Victoria negotiates this turbulent, cliff-lined passage. Watch the bustle of the boats and ferries from Bellhouse Provincial Park, a picnicking area at the end of Jack Road, or head to Montague Harbour Provincial Park, a beautiful preserve of beach and forest.

Like Salt Spring Island, Galiano is also a center for artists and craftspeople. Island's Edge Art Gallery, no. 4 at 33 Manzanita St. (tel. 250/539-9934), displays the work of many Gulf Island painters and sculptors.
