Frommer's Review
And so after more than 150 years, the Great Southern Hotel is no more. The old hotel was snapped up in 2006, and the renovations soon began. Work was still underway as this book went to press. The new owners have promised to "fuse" the hotel's Victorian structure with "vital modern facilities." Heaven knows a little updating couldn't hurt, but we're hoping this handsome five-story hotel isn't too much changed by the work as it has long been the grande dame hotel of Galway. In the heart of the city, overlooking Eyre Square, its location couldn't be more central -- next to the bus and rail station and within walking distance of all the major sights. The spacious public areas have high ceilings, elaborate plasterwork, crystal chandeliers, and original Connemara marble fireplaces. It's possible this construction could go on into 2008, so ask about what's being done in the building before you book, if you fear being awoken by a drill or hammer. The public areas are a favorite meeting place for Galwegians and the hotel is always buzzing. Note: It's very central, so there can be quite a bit of street noise. If that bothers you, ask for a room on an upper floor.
