Beaches

Come fair weather, the beaches and waters of Sopot and Gdynia are inundated by throngs of sun worshippers. Both locations have changing rooms and shower facilities. Gdansk-Orowo has a beach and a pier that's smaller than Sopot's but still quite charming. But if you've got a day to spare and the sun is shining, why not go for something a little more remote? The sandy stretches of the Hel Peninsula make a fun and relaxing change of pace.

Banana Boats

On the pier in Sopot, youth sporting the vests of the Water Taxi Company (tel. 502/334-534) will entice you to strap on a lifejacket and get bounced about in a motor boat on the Gulf of Gdansk. It's 20 z for 15 minutes of adrenalin rush.

Catamaran & Windsurfing

The Sopot Sailing Club (Hestii 3; tel. 58/555-72-00; www.skz.sopot.pl) is about a 20-minute walk from the pier. The club houses a few facilities. For windsurfing equipment rentals, the Sopot Surf Centrum (tel. 55/555-72-22; ssc122@wp.pl) hires out the complete set of equipment for 30 z per hour. They also offer individual and group lessons. Navigo (tel. 503/114-384; www.katamaran.sopot.pl), located in the third hangar on the left side of the entrance, is where the catamaran people are. Call ahead; the site can be deserted when the crew is out on the waters conducting the courses. If you're here for the watersports, the guest rooms at the Sopot Sailing Club (Hotel-Pokoje Goscinne Sopocki Klub Zeglarski) (Hestii 3; tel. 58/555-72-03; www.skz.sopot.pl) are clean and spacious, and equipped with basic kitchenettes. Some rooms can take up to eight people. Prices are 180 z to 230 z for double rooms.

Cycling

An easy and tranquil 10km (6 1/4-mile) bike lane skirts the beaches from Sopot to the northern Gdansk suburbs. Rowerownia (Fieldorfa 11/3, Gdansk; tel. 58/320-61-69; www.rowerownia.gda.pl) has a fleet of comfy bikes for 40 z per day. They deliver and pick up the bikes at an addition charge of 60 z or more, depending on the location.

Deep-Sea Fishing

At the price of 400 z per hour, the Water Taxi Company -- the same folks doing the banana boat tumbles -- can take up to six people angling in the Gdansk Bay. Call 2 days in advance to book.

Diving

Ticada Centrum Nurkowania (Wisniewskiego 26, Gdynia; tel. 58/629-48-46; www.ticada.pl) offers diving excursions to more than 10 shipwrecks in the Bay of Gdansk. Excursions are from 50 z. You can also consider the options in Hel Peninsula.

Golf

There are several golfing facilities in and around the Tri-City. The handiest is Golf Park Gdynia (Spódzielcza 1, Gdynia; tel. 58/721-24-24; www.golfparkgdynia.pl), an outdoor driving range that also has an indoor simulator. Farther afield, as you head north of the Tri-City and then turn west at Reda, you'll come to the Sierra Golf Club (Petkowice, Wejherowo; tel. 58/778-49-00; www.sierragolf.pl). The greens fee for the 18-hole course is 190 z on weekdays, 250 z on weekends and holidays. The club is 52km (32 miles) from Gdansk. The Postoowo Golf Club (Postoowo, Eganowo; tel. 58/683-71-00; www.golf.com.pl), 26km (16 miles) south of Gdansk, is a spectacular 18-hole golf course. Expect to negotiate waters along the challenging courses, nestled in the midst of the greenery of the Kashubian Lakeland. The club is open year-round daily from 8am to sunset.
