Gettysburg is dotted with little restaurants and fast-food joints. To start your day with coffee and pastry, visit Seasons Bakery, 100 Chambersburg St. (tel. 717/334-0377). It's open for breakfast and lunch. Closed Mondays.

Two historic taverns are experiences in themselves. The Dobbin House, 89 Steinwehr Ave. (tel. 717/334-2100), serves lunch and casual dinner daily in the Springhouse Tavern. Dinner is served in the Alexander Dobbin Dining Rooms. Each table in the bedroom is covered by a canopy -- historic dining in bed. It's quite an experience. It's open daily at 5pm. The Farnsworth House, 401 Baltimore St. (tel. 717/334-8838), serves dinner in the bullet hole-covered 1863 inn. Or have a casual meal in the adjacent garden. Lunch begins at 11am. Dinner is daily at 5pm.
