Frommer's Review
Located just inside the southeast entrance at East Glacier, this is GPI's flagship inn. This imposing timbered lodge stands as a stately tribute to the Great Northern Railroad and its early attempts to lure tourists to Glacier. The hotel is stylish and impressive, but not luxurious. The rooms are fairly small, with Spartan furnishings. But you probably won't spend much time in your room anyway. The lodge's carefully manicured lawn and blooming wildflowers frame the grounds in spectacular colors. The interior features massive Douglas fir pillars, some 40 inches in diameter and 40 feet tall. A wooden deck outside the lounge provides an excellent spot for cocktails, reading, or a late-afternoon snooze. A glass-enclosed breezeway connects the main building to the annex; the oak chaise lounges provide an ideal spot to watch the sun rise.
There is always a crowd at the dining rooms of the park hotels, and the dining room of the Glacier Park Hotel is no exception. If you want to eat here, make your reservation as soon as you arrive. The room is nice, but the food is ordinary and overpriced. The menu varies, but consists mostly of beef and seafood. The service is friendly and enthusiastic but can be uneven, since the park facilities rely almost entirely on college students for staff.
Presentations and entertainment include Blackfeet explaining the history and culture of their tribe, naturalists' programs, and an employee-performed rock-and-roll revue. There's also an American Indian trading post offering traditional souvenirs, artwork, and clothing from tribal artisans.
Facilities:
Restaurant; pool; 9-hole golf course; horseback riding arranged; a small chip-and-putt golf course occupies most of the front lawn and is very popular in the evenings
