Frommer's Review
Owner Roscoe Black has built himself quite an empire here on the east edge of Glacier National Park. The accommodations are very nice, the restaurant is excellent, and the gift shop is huge. The cheaper units are small, but bright, with golden logs. The furniture is lodgepole. The six cottages on the hill--which will hold four adults and rent for $285 per night in season--are the best luxury accommodations anywhere in or near the park. They have a living room, full kitchen, two bedrooms, spacious decks, a good-size bathroom with a tub, and gas grills. There are only six of them, and they rent out so fast that Black says he wishes he'd built twice as many. The cottages sit high on a hill, and the view from the decks out over St. Mary Lake is spectacular. Most units are air-conditioned--a rarity in the area.
When Roscoe Black met Mike Arp, owner of the Paradise Valley's Chico Hot Springs, Arp supposedly said to him, "So, I finally get to meet the owner of the second-best restaurant in Montana." One might not give the "Montana's best" title to St. Mary Lodge's Snowgoose Grille (or to Chico either, for that matter), but it is certainly in the top 10. The St. Mary Lodge also has the Curly Bear Café (serving burgers, sandwiches, and soups), and pizza, ice cream, espresso, pastry, and fudge facilities. The outdoors shop, Trail & Creek Outfitters (tel. 406/732-4431, ext. 332) is the best around.
