Värdshuset Björklunda ReviewIf you come looking for problems here, you are likely to find a few, but overall this is a real discovery -- and the price is right. On first sight, the inn evokes a villa on a Greek island. It's not, however. An unpretentious farmhouse from the 1890s, it developed during the 1970s into a well-respected hotel that's now directed by charming and hardworking members of the Jacobson family. It's set near a small beach, within a forest, and beside the main highway leading south into Burgsvik. Bedrooms are functional, well-maintained, and modern, but not a big selling point. Although fairly comfortable, rooms are small. Bathrooms -- each with a shower -- also are a bit cramped. Värdshuset Björklunda draws a loyal clientele to its restaurant between June and August. Within a cozy, traditionally decorated dining room, you can order culinary specialties from Gotland and, to a lesser extent, from the rest of Sweden as well. The best examples include smoked filets of lamb, barbecued lamb (a treat available only on Sat nights), and fresh salmon served with saffron sauce. Main courses run 65SEK to 200SEK ($13-$40/£6.50-£20). Menu service is curtailed and presented on an "as needed" basis the rest of the year, so if you arrive between October and April, it's likely that your meal will be served en famille with the Jacobsons, without the fanfare of a commercial restaurant, but with some of the warmth and conviviality of a private home. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
