Fans of ?60s-era dormitory architecture will admire the flat roofs, decorative concrete panels, and metal staircases on the buildings' exteriors. A 2004 renovation gave the lodges a friendlier look.

Inside, the rooms are surprisingly pleasant, with windows as wide as the rooms themselves and upgraded bathrooms. Most of the upstairs units on the more expensive "canyon side" offer at least a partial view of the canyon. Check-in for the Thunderbird is at the Bright Angel Lodge; for the Kachina, it's at the El Tovar.
