Golf courses on Grand Cayman are open daily from 8am to 6pm. Many golfers prefer to avoid the intense noonday sun.
The best course on the island is the Britannia Golf Club (tel. 345/745-4653), a well-respected, open-to-the-public 9-hole course positioned across the avenue from the Hyatt Regency on West Bay Road. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, greens fees are US$100 (£51) for 9 holes, or US$150 (£76) if you opt to play the course twice, thereby playing 18 holes. Cart rentals are included, but club rentals cost US$20 (£10) for 9 holes or US$40 (£20) for 18. Incidentally, there's a charming restaurant associated with this golf course, the Britannia Restaurant (tel. 345/745-4653). Open daily for lunch and dinner, it offers a view of the lake along with stiff drinks, and excellent salads and burgers, and a theme vaguely akin to a game lodge in Kenya.
Constantly windswept, the Links at SafeHaven (tel. 345/949-5988; www.safehaven.ky) is a par-71, 6,011m (6,574-yd.) course designed by Roy Case set in what is tantamount to a botanical garden. On-site are a clubhouse, pro shop, and restaurant. Greens fees are CI$114 (US$143/£68) per person for 18 holes, with mandatory golf carts included. The golf course lies across Seven Mile Beach Road, opposite the Westin Casuarina, and is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
A smaller, less important course is the Sunrise Family Golf Centre, Sunrise Landing, Savannah (tel. 345/947-4653; www.sunrisecayman.com). This 9-hole, par-3 course, with a full-length driving range and clubhouse, is a 15-minute drive east of George Town. Greens fees are US$21 (£11) for adults and US$10 (£5.05) for children 18 and under, with club rentals available for US$8 (£4.05). A full-day package with a pro on hand costs US$109 (£55).
