Schlossberg Hotel

Housed behind a beautifully embellished cerulean facade, this 15th-century baroque inn is both unusual and charming, and it's our favorite hotel in town. (It has more atmosphere than the Grand Hotel Wiesler Graz.) The owner's wife decorated this formerly decrepit rooming house herself in 1982 with 19th-century furniture. There's an early Biedermeier ceramic stove in the bar area, several pieces of baroque sculpture set in well-placed niches, and a courtyard with a lion's-head fountain. The medium-size rooms are among the town's most inviting, and many open onto private balconies.

Guests can enjoy drinks 24 hours a day on a terrace with a panoramic view of Graz from the banks of the River Mur. Breakfast is the only meal served, and it's offered in a beautiful winter garden.
