Great Keppel Island Resort, the island's major resort for more than 30 years, closed its doors in early 2008 for a complete rebuild, and at press time for this book was still grappling with the Australian government's decision that the proposed project was unacceptable because of the environmental impact it would have on the Great Barrier Reef. Meanwhile, visitors stay at a couple of smaller, family-oriented budget resorts on what has become a more peaceful island.
